STAR Protocols in an open access online journal for protocols (recipes for science). Users access and publish protocols on STAR Protocols. I am the UX lead for STAR Protocols working closely with the lead editor and a 3-person development team. I perform a variety of research activities that inform us how to best meet user needs to move the product forward. I also complete all design activities for the product which include new feature design, design for new content types, and small enhancement design.

Protocol Search and Filtering

When I started on STAR Protocols there were about 20 protocols. This index page simply showed all the protocols with no search or filtering. There are now 1200+ protocols and we’ve added search and categories. I conducted a survey and 1-1 user testing to ensure we met user needs, and I worked with the dev team to make our designs feasible.

Site Enhancements

I’m made designs for a variety of site enhancements. This includes incorporating a graphical abstract and metrics display. Additionally, I’ve created designs for new types of content beyond protocols. This included Q&As and Review Articles.
